The new revenue recognition guidelines set out by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) demand a proactive and comprehensive examination of a company’s end-to-end revenue function to assess and implement the required modifications to policies, processes, systems and organizational alignment. Chief financial officers will need to reevaluate their current revenue accounting processes, organization and systems, and assess the changes required to maintain compliance with the new guidance for annual reporting periods beginning December 15, 2017 (FASB).

The timing of revenue recognition is determined by the Revenue Recognition Method. Each method has process and technology considerations as given below:-

CapB’s SAP Financials IFRS/ASC Implementation Approaches:

Option 1: Additional Company Code with Special Purpose Ledger (Classic GL)

  • An additional company code as well as accounts are created to capture IFRS/ASC postings
  • One or more special purpose ledgers will be required
  • Additional configuration is required to support foreign exchange valuations, new financial statement versions, asset accounting, etc.

Option 2: Parallel Accounting with Special Purpose Ledger (Classic GL)

  • Additional accounts are created to capture IFRS/ASC postings
  • A set of common accounts, US GAAP accounts, local GAAP accounts, as well as IFRS/ASC accounts will be setup and maintained

Option 3: Parallel Ledger (New GL)

  • A separate ledger will be created in order to capture IFRS/ASC postings and maintain a complete set of IFRS/ASC books
  • The IFRS/ASC ledger is posted to in parallel with US GAAP and other regulatory ledgers

IFRS /ASC Lease Implementation Approach

  • New Standard: A new set of Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS 16 /ASC 842) has been published by Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) with the intention to standardize financial and operational leases across all the industries as they try to have access to assets of other companies
  • Global implementation: Companies in all industries and geographies are required to comply with new rules regarding the way operational leases are treated by 1st Jan 2019
  • IT and business impact: Chief financial officers will need to re-evaluate their current leasing processes, contracts and systems, and assess the changes required to maintain compliance with the new guidance for annual reporting periods beginning January 1st 2019
